Yes, you can use white vinegar to turn an egg into a patterned egg without any paint.

Let's take a look at the finished product:

Why? How? Please look down.

principle

the chemical properties and natural pigments of chicken eggshell are used here. The brown of the eggshell mainly comes from a compound called protoporphyrin IX, and most of these pigments are concentrated in the outermost layer of the eggshell. The acetic acid in white vinegar reacts with calcium carbonate in the eggshell. By eroding the surface of the eggshell in this way, some pigments can be removed and the egg color becomes lighter. At the same time, cover some areas so that they do not come into contact with white vinegar, so that different shades of patterns are obtained.

practice

Materials and tools:

Fine paper tape

white vinegar

material matters

. Eggs: any egg can be treated this way, but the darker the brown, the easier it is to get bright patterns and color layers.

2. Candles: tea wax that can be placed stably on the table is the most suitable.

3. Container: to save the amount of white vinegar, it is better to use a small cup, wide enough to put in and take out an egg.

1. Cover pattern

before soaking vinegar, first determine the pattern and cover the dark part of the egg surface.

1. Cover pattern

(the relationship between the coverage part and the color effect)

here are two ways to overlay the pattern:

a. Tape method

this method is more convenient and suitable for making simple lines and geometric shapes. You need a roll of paper tape that is narrow enough. Stick the pattern on the egg surface with duct tape and gently scrape the tape with your fingernails until it fits completely. The reason for choosing paper tape is that it is moderately sticky and does not leave a trace when it is removed.

b. Wax painting

this method of creative freedom is very large, but it requires a lot of patience. You need a pencil, a candle and a toothpick.

(wax oil line drawing effect)

toothpicks don't work well? In fact, there is a special tool for drawing wax lines on eggs, which Ukrainians use to make traditional batik eggs called "Pysanka". This tool is not easy to buy, but the link to Ref. 2 at the end of the article provides a DIY tutorial.

2. Start etching

cover the dark pattern area, pour a small cup of white vinegar (can not pass the egg), put the egg into the clock, can be timed 2.5-3 minutes (I think the first 2.5 minutes is better), immediately take out the egg and rinse with clean water. (note: vinegar is irritating to the skin, rinse immediately after contact)

(brushing eggs)

3. Add more layers

next, you can etch again to add more color layers. Wipe the washed eggs dry and add some additional patterns to them using the above method. This time the part covered will eventually be lighter brown, while the part that has been exposed all the time will be the lightest.

you can also test more etching or adjust the soaking time. Don't worry that a few minutes of soaking vinegar will make the eggshell very fragile, because it takes about 48 hours for white vinegar to completely remove calcium carbonate from the eggshell.

(a color level that is not very clear)

4. Remove cover

the tape can be removed directly, the wax can be slightly scalded with hot water close to boiling temperature to melt, scoop out the eggs and wipe off the excess wax oil on the surface with a paper towel.

finally, in order to preserve the colored eggsAnd take out the contents of the eggs. You can make a small hole in the top and bottom of the egg, insert a toothpick and stir it, and then blow the egg hard from the small hole above. The eggs taken out can still be cooked without affecting the taste (there is no vinegar taste in the test).

next, it's time for you to be creative.
